Call a specialist to talk about Zanzibar now.

The ‘Spice Island' of Zanzibar lies about 35km off the east coast of Tanzania and is about 1500 sq km in size. Zanzibar is a palm fringed cosmopolitan island with a mix of cultures and outstanding hospitality. More than 90% of the population are Muslim.

The beautiful exotic island of Zanzibar has a laid back pace of life, and the old tradition of spice trading is still evident here today. A spice tour is a must and involves a walk in the western and central regions of the island through plantations, private gardens and forests. There are over 50 different spices and fruits produced here including cinnamon, pepper, ginger, coffee, cocoa, sugar cane and coconuts.

Most visitors, however, come to Zanzibar for the palm fringed fine sandy beaches and the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean. There is good snorkelling and scuba diving, as well as deep sea fishing. Its capital - Stone Town - is well worth a visit. For more information please visit our www.ZanzibarAway.com website.

Getting there

From Zambia there are three flights a week from Lusaka to Dar-es-Salaam with Zambezi Airlines.  Zanzibar is then a 30 minute flight from Dar.  Dar is served by daily flights from the UK and there are also direct flights to Zanzibar.

Weather

Zanzibar experiences ideal holiday weather for most of the year.  The heat of summer is seasonally often cooled by windy conditions, resulting in pleasant sea breezes, particularly on the North and East coasts.  Short rains can occur in November but are characterised by short showers which do not last long.  The long rains normally occur in April and May although this is often referred to as the 'Green Season', and it typically doesn't rain every day during that time.  Despite this many lodges do close during May.

Health

There are no compulsory requirements other than yellow fever if arriving from a yellow fever-infected country (which does not include Zambia).  Tanzania is a malarial area and precautions should be taken.

Visas

All visitors require a passport, valid for the duration of their stay. Preparations are under way for visitors to obtain visas at any entry point, and this time-saving facility is available to visitors arriving at Zanzibar International Airport. Other points in Tanzania currently offering visa on entry are Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airports.
