Our Safaris

SO MUCH MORE THAN GAME DRIVES

A safari in Zambia can include a wide range of exciting activities, beyond the core activity of the 4x4 game drive. Visitors to Zambia can choose from walking safaris, night drives, canoeing expeditions, river trips and much more. We recommend itineraries with the scope to do more than simple game drives, to further our guests' enjoyment of their time in Africa.

We have tried to group the various activities that can be undertaken during a safari holiday into different sections, as shown below. To find out more information you can either link on from these illustrated panels or simply choose the activity that interests you from the drop-down menu above.

At ZambiaAway we will design a safari for you that includes as many of these activities as are of interest to you, either focusing on just one geographical area, or taking in a wide spread of different habitats right across the country. Whether you are a first time safari visitor, a hard core fly-fisherman, or someone with a desire to just soak up the sun on a tropical beach, we can cater for your exact requirements.

For more specific assistance regarding any of these activities please call us on 0121 472 1541, or email us using the contact form in the right hand column of this page.

Safari activities

Most itineraries will revolve around the activities listed here, but with two activities per day at most lodges, you will get plenty of time to sample everything Zambia has to offer.

Game Drives

The classic Zambia safari should certainly be based around the game-drive - venturing out into the bush in your trusty 4x4 to tackle any terrain and get you to the best spot. You will never forget your first close-up lion or elephant sighting.

Night Drives

A great feature of a safari in Zambia is the ability to take night drives to get sightings of nocturnal wildlife. Few other National Parks allow this activity to take place. But it's your best chance of spotting the elusive, and largely nocturnal, leopard.

Walking Safaris

Zambia is particularly renowned for its excellent walking safaris, being the home of the legendary walking safari pioneer Norman Carr.

AfricaAway has pioneered its own range of walking safaris here.

Family Safaris

A safari can also make for a wonderful family holiday with the correct preparation, and we want to help those planning on taking their children to Africa.

Needless to say, safety is a prime consideration here.

Activity-based safaris

Although game drives make up the majority of the safari activities for most visitors to Zambia, there are lots of activities suitable for enthusiasts to pursue in more depth there if they want to.  All these activities are suitable for any skill level, so if you always wanted to try bungee-jumping or fishing for example, why not give it a go in Zambia?

Canoeing

From a 60 minute paddle along the Lower Zambezi to a full 9 night safari covering many miles, we can offer exciting canoeing tours of Zambia's rivers.

If need be you can have most of the work done by a safari guide.

Fishing

If you are a keen fisherman, we can organise dedicated tours concentrating on fly fishing on the Zambezi or Kafue rivers - not to be missed. Catching (and then releasing) a specimen of the renowned Tiger-fish is an unforgettable experience.

Photography

Participate in week-long workshops in the Zambian bush led by professional photographers -  for those who want to improve their camera skills in a wonderful setting.

Our 'Safari Companion' download gives more information on this.

Birdwatching

There is a huge variety of birdlife in Zambia including many endemic species - itineraries including many unique habitats that put the emphasis on birdwatching are available. Of course the right time of the year needs to be chosen - many species are migratory.

Sporting Activities

From rafting down the Batoka Gorge at the Victoria Falls, to horse-riding at Shiwa N'gandu, there are many sporting activities to choose from.

Unfortunately golf is not an activity that you will find here!

Special interest safaris

Not necessarily things to do while on safari, these ARE the safaris for those looking for a safari with a difference or with particular needs.

Beach Holidays

Many of our guests opt to extend their visit to Africa by taking a beach holiday - a perfect opportunity for some R&R on a tropical beach after a hectic safari.

Both Zanzibar and Lake Malawi are readily reached from Zambia.

Honeymoons

We specialise in providing memorable and effortless honeymoons in Zambia so if you are planning yours why not call us and speak to someone for advice? The main drawback may be the 5.00 a.m. wakeup call experienced when out on safari.

Cultural Visits

We can arrange village visits as part of a traditional safari or full cultural tours with the emphasis on meeting and interacting with the local population. Visits like this - especially to a village school - will be remembered longer than most of your game sightings.

Green Season Safaris

The green, or "emerald", season is for those that want to see the Parks when the waters are high, the vegetation is lush and fellow tourists thin on the ground. It it also one of the best times to view the magnificent Victoria Falls.

Bush Skills Safari

Our Bush Skills Safari offers exciting possibilities for new and experienced safari-goers alike with instruction in tracking, bush craft and survival skills.

It does, however, require a group of at least six people.
